With spots in the next round running out, teams stepped up on Saturday to stamp their ticket in the final day of Pool Play action of the 2017 HSBN Fall Classic tournament. The Wolverines held off the Paladins 5-2 to clinch 18U Pool A, the Broward Patriots downed the Lions 10-5 to win 18U Pool B and the Davie Wildcats won 16U Pool A following a 7-1 victory over The Dawgs. Dragons Baseball also advanced to the next round with a 9-8 win over the Stingarees in 18U Pool D.

The 18U Pool B contest essentially served as a playoff preview, as both teams entered the game having already clinched a spot in the next round. Joey Cicini put the Broward Patriots ahead for good as part of a four-run second inning, as he connected for a two-RBI double that broke a 2-2 tie. A throwing error allowed two more runs to score, but the Lions fought back over the next two frames thanks to RBI singles from Jonathan Vega and Anthony Fazzio.

The Patriots (3-0) added four more runs in the top of the seventh to pull away. Cicini had an RBI groundout and Colbe Aven later added a triple that drove in a pair. Matt Ruiz finished off the scoring for the Patriots with an RBI single, after also scoring his club’s first run off an error in the first inning.

Every time the Lions (2-1) allowed runs they answered right back. After falling behind early, Dylan Feinberg and Armando Sierra delivered back-to-back RBI singles to put the Lions ahead, and Sierra answered one last time with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh that closed out the scoring. Sierra had a strong day overall, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and also striking out six in three innings of work on the mound.

The Fall Classic continues with second-round action starting on Monday night.
