It was a game of big innings in Monday’s 16U championship game of the 2016 HSBN Fall Classic. With both sides swinging big bats, it was the Parkland Eagles that prevailed in a 10-7 shootout with Lightning Baseball. The Eagles tallied the deciding runs during a three-run fourth, before adding some helpful insurance with a pair of runs in the fifth.

Gary Swanson had a nice day at the plate and also scored the winning run in the fourth. Swanson was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, and he had a two-RBI double to left-center field before coming home to make it 8-2 thanks to a sac-fly RBI from Andrew Jenner. An inning later Coby Mayo drove in Tyler Lee and later scored himself to widen the lead, after the Lightning rallied within a run in the top of the fifth.

The Lightning had jumped out of the gate to seize a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Jake Iseman singled up the middle and Christian Aniello and Jonathan Roach both walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Iseman to cross the plate and Sebastian Moros followed with an RBI single that brought in Aniello.

The Eagles rallied to take the lead with a five-run second inning. Hunter Fitz-Gerald walked and Louis Esposito singled through the right side, and Kane Piccicini lined a double to center field to drive in both runners. Jhan Ledezma ripped a liner into left field to keep it going and Thomas Pogacsas followed with an infield single. Both runners scored on wild pitches and Zach Beekman walked and came in on a throwing error.

The Lightning answered back to pull within 8-7 with five runs in the fifth. Jesus Mota was hit by a pitch, Rohan Lingam walked and Carlos Gonzalez singled up the middle to load the bases. Iseman hit a grounder up the middle that erased the batter heading to second, but also scored two runs as Iseman was safe at first. Aniello and Roach both singled to keep things going, and all three base runners came in on errors.

The Lightning made one final push in the sixth. Adam Katz walked and Mota reached on a bunt singled to bring the tying run to the plate, but the Eagles turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
