One big swing helped lead the way to a championship victory for RBI Baseball on Sunday afternoon at Len Koch Field in Hollywood. Left fielder Devin Adams smacked a three-run home run high over the left field fence to break things open and lead RBI to a 5-1 win over the Dirtbags in the HSBN Boys of Summer July C 18U championship.

Already up 1-0 thanks to an RBI double from PJ Ximinies, Marlins shortstop Gabe Mendez started the third inning with a double. A fielder’s choice erased the lead runner at third, with Dylan Carter reaching to first base. Gianlucca Borelly and catcher Gio Ocampo drew walks, with Aaron Cooper coming in as a courtesy-runner for Ocampo. Carter came home on a passed ball, and then Adams connected for his three-run blast.

Both teams also earned a berth in the invitational Boys of Summer Champions tournament at the end of July, which features the finalists from each of HSBN’s four summer tournaments. The Dirtbags also previously earned an invitation after winning the June A 18U title.

Carter started on the hill for the Marlins (4-0), tossing the first five innings to earn the victory. The right-hander struck out four while allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks. Julio Diaz struck out three in two scoreless relief innings.

The Dirtbags got on the scoreboard to avoid the shutout with a run in the fifth. Jon Weis singled to start it off and then moved to second base thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Winston Nunez. James Spatafora rolled a single up the middle and Weis raced around third to score on the play.

Nathan Rodriguez followed with another single to keep things going, but then the Marlins turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

The Dirtbags (3-1) struggled finding the big hits, stranding six runners on the day.
